Road Tested: Vans Akat LX x Taka Hayashi

When I saw these first announced last January I called the shoe possibly perfect – one that seemingly combined the ingredients of two of my favorite sneaker brands: Vans and Visvim. These Vans have no distinguishable traits that were picked up from other Vans. Unlike most Vans x designer collaborations, they appear to have started completely from scratch with this one and of course, they killed it. The super thin white sole has almost no tread and is very low profile. Where it lacks in overall cushion on the outside, they make up for it with a nice soft heel pad on the inside. And needless to say, you probably need to keep these out of the rain.

Anyways… enough stating the obvious. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments.

Quality wise, is the $130+ for vans worth it?

      • Robby Wells 12:01 pm on September 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Oh yeah. Well worth the $130 price tag. Another brand could definitely get away charging far more. I paid $130 at HUF.

hmmm… yeah i saw them on the huf online store but they only had that weird curry color and i don’t know if i could pull those off.

Yeah man i got a lil’too crazy this past trip to nyc, picked up LOTS of stuff on sale but nothing too wild. I did get this CRAZY Z Zegna windbreaker that retailed for $890 for $190. But right now i’m really trying to save up…remember i’m suppose to buy that Enzo in 5 years.

In Europe they go for 175 Euro up!!! Copped the “weird curry” ones at Caliroots in Stockholm. Didnt like the color at first but they age beautifully.

I noticed they are crazy expensive in Europe. Oki-Ni has them for well over $200US

Wondering if these are still available anywhere in NYC? Also how did you size on these (don’t have experience with Vans at all)? I’m a 10.5 in most nikes. 9.5 in chucks. Thanks!

I haven’t seen them in NYC (where I live), but I bought mine online at HUFSF.com. Check there for sure. They seem to be normal sizes… I wear an 11, and these fit perfectly.

Just bought these the other day in the Bitter Chocolate colorway. Quite the beautiful shoe. Haven’t been excited for a pair of new shoes in a really long time. I wear 11.5 in Vans Authentic’s and Era’s, 10.5 in Chucks. Bought an 11.5 in these Akat’s. Fits like a glove. Hope this helps.

Rare Video with My Idol: Hiroki Nakamura of Visvim

First it was people like Ricky Henderson, Dwight Gooden and Ozzie Smith. Then the likes of Johnny Depp and Michael Hutchence, followed later by Mike Carroll and Rick Howard. All were my idols of my younger years. Hiroki Nakamura has been assigned that role for a while.

    Road Tested: Visvim Logan Lattice

    Click any image to enlarge.

Ya know, when these first came out, I was a bit disappointed with the resemblance to Vans SK8 Hi – which happen to be my least favorite Vans shoes. I thought, why would anyone drop that kind of dime on a pair of overpriced Vans? Then I saw these in person at Union NYC and then came to fully understand the difference. First, the resemblance to a pair of Vans in purely aesthetic. The quality of materials from top to bottom is pure Visvim and the details are NUTS. I never fully grasped the ‘lattice’ concept, but I suspect that it is inspired by traditional Japanese architecture or something. They literally sliced/scored every inch of the leather in this lattice pattern, which makes their already soft leather feel even softer in your hands. Unlike anything I have seen and of course, they are highly recommended. How could I not like something from this brand. Now if I could shed about 100 lbs, maybe I could squeeze into some of their apparel.

Road Tested: Visvim Mowat Moc Veggie

I am loving my latest Visvim pick-ups. These are the Mowat Moc Veggie with the super nice leather and typical killer construction from Visvim. I hope to be rocking these on boat someday. Even if it is on Lake Lewisville. How would these go over in Party Cove? I feel a little like Tom Cruise when I wear them, but not because I feel like the world’s biggest movie star. It’s beecause they seem to have a 2″ thick sole like the shoes he wears, right?

Those would be so fly in Party Cove… float up jamming out to Christopher Cross!

    Upper West Side Steez

A few weeks back, I went to a great party on the Upper West Side. There was a no-shoe policy at the party, so outside the elevator/front door, there were dozens of shoes laying all over the floor. I saw a wide variety of shoes, including an abundance of prepped out boat shoes. I was inspired. I had to have some. So in order to step up my Upper West Side Swag*, I went in with these, because I was mesmerized by the rich red sole. Almost like Louboutins for dudes. I go hard.

    *Ironic use of word ‘Swag’

    Pete Wentz – Visvim Folk

Damn. Hate when this happens. Not the first time with this dude. What does that say about me?

Damn, dont you just HATE when some clown ruins a good thing? This guy is the definition of a CLOWN.

      • Robby Wells 1:16 am on June 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

it happens. It sucks. I wish these guys would just start their own companies and wear their own shit. Fortunately, 99% of the shoe-buying planet thinks Visvims are ugly, and no amount of Pete Wentz co-signing will change that. I actually get loads of complements from girls on those shoes – probably because they look like something that should be in their closet, not mine.

Visvans – But This is Not A Sneaker Blog

Another pair that I have wanted for a long, long time.  Finally found these in Australia.   Check the little skull.  I will never figure out how I end up with Native American-inspired shoes from Japan?
