It is rare that the perfect song is so appropriately bundled with the perfect movie. Unfortunately, it is not so rare that I am awake at 4AM to see the movie for the first time in 25 years. I loooooooved this movie when I was a kid – Foul Play – probably because Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase were pretty much the Hollywood version of my parents. As my friend Janet says… Chevy Chase was never better than when he was on coke. I guess I cannot disagree, but he will always be my Hollywood dad.
I have to give it up to Barry Manilow. The guy gets all of the rewards of a superstar, with none of the headache. He has sold 76 million records, sold out shows at Wembley, has fleets of exotic cars, huge homes, and even street cred** He has never been hooked on drugs, never been shot at, and he’s never even penned one song about how rich he is. He may be from Brooklyn, but he would suck as a rapper because he is actually too real.
Several well-known entertainers have given Manilow their “stamp of approval,” including Sinatra, who was quoted in the 1970s regarding Manilow, “He’s next.” In 1988, Bob Dylan stopped Manilow at a party, hugged him and said, “Don’t stop what you’re doing, man. We’re all inspired by you.” Arsenio Hall cited Manilow as a favorite guest on The Arsenio Hall Show and admonished his audience to respect him for his work
Hustlers, that’s if you’re still living… get on down:
